Earning your stripes

At Kentland, the classic 33 sticker or black and orange triple trim on the helmet and the E, S, or L on the black leather helmet shield have meaning. Just like in life, these stripes are not given but earned through hard work and dedication.

During the probationary period, members have not yet earned these stripes. Once completing their rookie book and are voted on by the members, they can proudly wear the stripes that signify their commitment and experience. Members can then submit a request to the Engine or Tower Captain requesting to join their company.

Members who want to join the Squad company must first be assigned to the Engine or Tower and complete an additional six months of training for their squad test. Afterward, they can submit a letter to the Squad Captain requesting to join their company.

Officers do their best to assign tower guys to the tower and engine guys to the engine when creating a riding assignment. However, any member can ride in any company at any time. These company assignments boost morale and create debates about which company is better, fostering a sense of pride and ownership over the tools and apparatus.

While everyone is responsible for the overall upkeep of the tools and apparatus, it is usually passed on through company assignments
